Acrylic parging is a foundation coating mixed with acrylic polymers, which make it more flexible and water-resistant than a plain cement coat. That flexibility is why it holds up well through Ottawa’s freeze-thaw cycles.
Acrylic vs cement parging
Standard parging is straight cement mortar – affordable and fine for many walls, but rigid, so it can crack again if the foundation moves or stays damp. Acrylic parging bonds more strongly, flexes slightly with the wall, and sheds water better. It usually costs a little more, but it tends to last longer in tough conditions.
When we recommend acrylic parging
Cracked before
Foundations that have cracked or flaked in the past.
Damp or shaded
Walls that sit in damp or shaded ground.
Heavy freeze-thaw
Surfaces that see a lot of freeze-thaw movement.
Longest-lasting finish
Anywhere you want the longest-lasting result.
When standard parging is fine
If the wall is sound, dry, and stable, a normal cement coat does the job for less. We’ll tell you honestly which one your foundation actually needs rather than upselling the pricier option.
